Full Description
Environmental toxins in the food and water of dogs and cats can put a heavy demand on the liver of these animals because it's the liver's job to eliminate these toxins. Hepagen is a unique formula that combines two beneficial botanical ingredients – milk thistle and curcumin (from turmeric) – with antioxidants and nutrients that support the liver's normal detoxification processes. Hepagen provides the active forms of vitamin B6 (pyridoxal 5'-phosphate) and vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin), along with dimethylglycine, methionine, and N-acetylcysteine, all of which are essential nutrients for supporting multiple liver detoxification processes.
Healthy liver function is necessary for both humans and animals to activate pyridoxine (vitamin B6). In cases where liver health might be diminished, supplementing with the active form of vitamin B6 – pyridoxal 5'-phosphate – is definitely indicated. Hepagen provides 5 mg of active pyridoxal 5'-phosphate because it's a cofactor for so many enzyme reactions. Vitamin B12 – methylcobalamin – helps maintain optimal energy production in the cells of the body. Vitamin B12 is also necessary for the digestion of amino acids and the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats to take place. Because much of the vitamin B12 is stored in and then supplied by the liver, a properly functioning liver is essential to maintain adequate vitamin B12 levels. Dimethylglycine (DMG) is a derivative of the simplest of the amino acids, glycine. Methionine is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid that is necessary for phase II detoxification. It also helps metabolize fats and is a necessary precursor to the synthesis of cysteine and taurine. A healthy liver has an abundance of glutathione, a very powerful antioxidant that the body can synthesize on its own. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a protein composed of the amino acid cysteine and a sulfhydryl group, is a precursor to glutathione. Thus, the inclusion of NAC in Hepagen supports liver health by facilitating the animal's ability to make glutathione.
Silybum marianum (milk thistle) contains several antioxidant flavonolignans (as silymarin) that help stabilize hepatocyte membranes, neutralize free radicals, and, like NAC, help maintain liver glutathione levels.
The curcumin in Hepagen is bound to phospholipids, which significantly increases it absorbability. Curcumin is known to have significant liver-protective capabilities.
